Kim Patra, Health Consultant and Soul Sister!

Besides the serenity and the fun side of living in Bali, Kim was involved in voluntary work during the tragedy of October 2002 Bali bombings.

Kim Patra is a health consultant who has lived in Bali for many decades. She has witnessed and experienced so much that has happened on the island; some obviously joyous and positive, some heart-breaking and never to be forgotten. Besides the serenity and the fun side of living in Bali, Kim was involved in voluntary work during the tragedy of October 2002 Bali bombings. She went through the most traumatic days following the bombing that claimed hundreds of lives and wounded many more. The horrific experiences during those dark days led Kim to write a book titled In the Arms of The Angels – a tribute and form of therapy, for herself and all who were involved.

These days, Kim runs an on-call, home visit, health consultancy service based in Sanur. One of her many services are birth preparation classes based on hypnosis for relaxation as well as good down-to-earth information for expectant Mums and Dads. Her birth classes use the power of the mind and self-suggestion by the pregnant woman in preparation for childbirth so that she is able to go through it in a smooth and comfortable way – with minimal stress, whether the baby is born naturally or by cesarean section. Most importantly, it has a positive and powerful impact on the mental health of the parents and baby in the womb. The courses are run in various locations either in groups or at individual sessions.

For many decades now, Kim has been a flight nurse assisting unfortunate expatriates and tourists back to their home countries. She always makes herself available to listen to anyone in Bali that has got themselves into a pickle with their health and always gives the best advice that she can.

Many people will also know Kim as a talented musician, whether singing, playing guitar or with her harmonica. It must be even more satisfying for Kim as she plays to an audience of women she has helped, and even children she helped to birth – like her extended family has come to listen to her.

Originally Kim came to Bali in 1985 to windsurf….and she never left! She spent her days at the beach, enjoying island life, and also ran a successful garments business. Kim was already a registered nurse and a midwife in Australia and had been working in health for years. To be honest, there’s probably at least one more book waiting to be written by Kim.

Kim has been a constant in Sanur for many years, entertaining us with her online music during the pandemic, playing at festivals and local venues, and providing care and comfort to anyone who needed an expert ear and advice. In fact, she is known as Mama Kim and it’s a name that suits her perfectly.
