Starting a spa business can be an exciting but also overwhelming journey. There are many tasks and responsibilities to manage, from designing the lay out, selecting equipment and products to understanding the current market trends, customer preferences, competition and so on. But nothing stops this determine woman entrepreneur from Karangasem, East Bali. I gusti Ayu Suryaningsih works tirelessly and make use of her skills, knowledge, and passion to achieve her goals and make her entrepreneurial dreams a reality. Born as the youngest of eight siblings does not make her dependent upon her elder sisters. As soon as she finished high school she went off to Denpasar. And, Mandara Spa Bali was the beginning of her vocation. She completed a series of training in this luxurious spa center where she learnt both theoretical and practical components as well as spa treatments and protocols, ethics and professionalism, health and safety, and product knowledge.

Year 2002 she went to Maldives and worked at the spa at Taj Exotica Hotel, a luxurious wellness retreat located on Emboodhu Finolhu Island. A year after that, she went to Canada and worked for five years at The Sahara Spa, a luxurious spa and wellness center located in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Her international journey then took her to Bahamas and worked at Four Seasons Resort Exuma, a luxury beachfront resort located on a private island in the Exuma chain of islands – for another five years. Then, she went to work at The Cambridge Beaches Resort and Spa, a luxury resort located in Sandys, Bermuda. It is situated on a private peninsula and offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Never stop trying, keep hopes alive and do prayers was Surya’s personal words of wisdom she wrote in each of her school books. She believes in hard work and nothing can stop her determination. Her willpower, perseverance, and resilience overcome any obstacles that come her way. Surya will not be held back by societal expectations or gender stereotypes, but instead will use them as fuel to propel her forward. Her determination enables her to tackle challenges head-on, learn from failures, and adapt to changing circumstances.

Surya started her own business, Amaya Wellness and Spa, located at Jl. Tukad Citarum No.42, Panjer, Denpasar. It is a place for relaxation and provides massage, body treatment, facial, hair treatment, manicure, pedicure, eyelash extensions, eyebrow embroidery, eyebrow threading, waxing, yoga and tai chi.

Surya believes in the importance in giving back to the community. It doesn’t always have to involve financial contributions but her time, skills, and support can make a significant difference in the lives of others and make a positive impact in the community. Surya offers her knowledge and experiences by mentoring and tutoring new beginners who is willing to learn and to work in her spa. Giving young woman opportunity to have skill and to be independent financially.
